Brainstorming an Emotion-Based Debating App

Business strategy for EmoMatrix: defining the audience, product wedge and revenue model before any production code was written.

EmoMatrix approached us with a concept for a debating app built around emotional signals rather than plain text scoring. The idea was ambitious: score arguments by the emotional state they create, not only by who "won" the thread. Our engagement covered the front half of the product lifecycle, from the raw idea through structured brainstorming and into a revenue-focused business strategy.

What we were asked to answer

Before anyone wrote production code, three questions had to be settled. Who is this for, what makes a debate worth returning to, and how does the product make money without turning every conversation into a paywall?

  • Audience. Competitive debaters, community moderators and people who already argue online but want a clearer signal than likes and reply chains.
  • Product wedge. Emotion-aware scoring as the differentiator, with clear feedback loops so users understand why a round landed the way it did.
  • Commercial model. A freemium path into premium analytics, season passes and hosted debate rooms, sized against what similar consumer apps can realistically charge.

The strategy work

We ran structured brainstorming sessions, mapped competing products, sized the addressable market and pressure-tested the revenue model against acquisition cost. The output was a product definition and go-to-market outline the founders could take into design and engineering with fewer open questions.

The engagement stayed deliberately strategic. Defining the product, the audience and how it sustains itself commercially mattered more at that stage than shipping a half-finished app.
